BRN 481 Case #2: due 6/17/2019

On June 24, 2014, May 8, 2015, and August 27, 2015, Syngenta(SYT) rebuffed potential acquisition offers from Monsanto. Apparently, many Syngenta shareholders were disappointed by the failure of the Monsanto deal, so the company pursued other possible combinations. On February 3, 2016, ChemChina offered to pay $43 billion and Syngenta management supported this offer. On May 4, 2016, Syngenta announced that more than 80 percent of the shares agreed to the takeover. The transaction closed on June 26, 2017.

The course web page has an Excel spreadsheet file (in ZIP format) BRN481Case219.ZIP that contains daily stock returns for SYT as well as the CRSP value-weighted portfolio of NYSE, Amex, and Nasdaq stocks (Rmv), and the portfolio of Swiss stocks (SSMI). All returns are expressed in US dollars.

Analyze the stock market reaction of SYT to the various announcements of takeover related events. Based on the behavior of SYT stock prices (and volumes), on which days do you think the stock market first learned about these events. Why?

Feel free to use internet resources (e.g., Google, Wikipedia, etc.) to learn more about these events.
